Ancient Chinese coins: A brief history of Yuan coins
The foundation of the first Mongol Empire was laid by Temujin. An Aritocrat by birth, he was conferred the title of Jenghis Khan.
Belligerent by nature, the Mongols fought with fierce discipline. They were masters of horse back warfare, having being trained from young on horse back as scouts or hunting.
After defeating the Western Xia Dynasty in 1227, Jenghis Khan marched against the Jin Dynasty. The conquest of China was finally completed in 1279 by Jenghis Khan's grandson, Kublai Khan. As the first emporer of his reign, he adopted the Chinese dynastic name of Yuan (meaning the origin).
Paper currency was extensively used during the Yuan Dynasty as it was believed that copper cash coin would bring unrest to the empire. This resulted in relatively few Yuan coins been minted during that period.
