Ancient Chinese coins: A brief history of Ming coins
Before Zhu Yuan Zhang became Emperor of the Ming Dynasty, he minted the Ming coin - Da Zhong Tong Bao in Nanjing, China. After he ascended the throne, he adopted the reign title
of "Hong Wu". The Hong Wu Tong Bao coins were minted in the capital and at various provinces. Later the use of paper currency was revived due to wide spread forgery and shortage of bronze. Thus only a relatively small amount of Ming coins were minted during the period A.D. 1368 to 1506. Paper money fell out of use after the first year of Ming Emperor Jai Jing's reign (A.D. 1522 - 1567) with the resumption of minting of bronze coins. Thereafter, each Ming Emperor minted their own coins.
