Ancient Chinese coins: A brief history of Wang Mang, Hsin coins (or Xin coin)
When Wang Mang became the Prince Regent, under the dynastic title of Hsin (or Xin), he carried out four major reforms of the monetary system. These reforms were done in the name of
restoration of the ancient institutions.
In all, he introduced 37 different kinds of money made up of different shapes, patterns, substances and units. The "bao huo" system consist of five substances,
six names and twenty eight units. The disorderly monetary system brought tremendous misery to the Chinese people back then.
